My Journey

In my last blog I talked a little about my past, both personal and professional, and my why. In today’s blog I’ll be looking back at my journey to becoming a counsellor in the hope it might inspire or help others considering a change in career.

I had always worked with people but I knew next to nothing about ‘real’ counselling, the various types or who could benefit from it. Initial research led me to a local college which ran courses from an introduction to counselling (Level 2) all the way to professional Diploma (Level 4). If considering becoming a qualified counsellor you can’t apply straight to Level 4 but must progress through the various levels, learning your craft as you go. Initially Levels 2 and 3 were based on the Person-Centred approach. 

Person-centred therapy was developed by Carl Rogers in the 1940s. It moved away from traditional theories of the therapist as the expert and moved instead toward a nondirective, empathic approach that empowers the client in the therapeutic process. The therapy is based on Rogers’s belief that every person strives for and has the capacity to fulfil their own potential. This appealed to me; I didn’t have to be the expert in a traditional sense; I could simply support my clients through:

  • Empathy (the counsellor trying to understand the client’s point of view)
  • Congruence (the counsellor being a genuine person) and
  • Unconditional positive regard (the counsellor being non-judgemental)

During Levels 2 and 3 I found myself questioning if Person-Centred Counselling was for me. I have always been used to offering people practical help and advice and I felt frustrated that I wasn’t able to do this using Carl Roger’s methods.  I thought about ending my studies there when just before the summer break, at the end of Level 3, the college announced that Level 4 was changing to Integrative Counselling. After attending an initial meeting, I realised this was the type of counselling for me.

Integrative counselling, as the name suggests, brings together elements of different therapies. Integrative therapists take the view that there is no single approach that can treat each client in all situations. Rather, each person needs to be considered as a whole and counselling techniques must be tailored to their individual needs and personal circumstances. I embarked on my next journey (Level 4) knowing I was on the right path.

I enjoy working with my clients knowing I can tailor the therapy to their needs using elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Transactional Analysis, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Gestalt, to name but a few, but that all my work is under pinned by the Person-Centred approach. This means putting my clients at the heart of my work, providing the right circumstances so they can find their own answers to the challenges they face. After all, no one knows us better than ourselves.

I feel that it is a privilege to work with each of my clients and be part of their journey; being trusted with their most personal thoughts, helping each individual overcome their challenges. I am so glad I took that step to train as a counsellor and didn’t give up at the first hurdle.
